Old Lang Syne

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

We two have paddled in the rising stream
as we tried to cross the Edith.
But cyclone Grant between us came
in one unholy torrent.

The brolgas in the bush can dance
in grateful jubilation;
that the wind blowing from the Arafura Sea
left them in peaceful isolation.

Who cares of walking slopes to pick
the daisies of long ago?
As long as we’re not beneath them
we’ll give next year a go!

You can raise your glass of Jansz, my friend,
and I’ll raise my Rumball high.
Let’s drink to memories of times long gone,

hoping better times are nigh.

Politically Correct Christmas gift from Santa

Something special was needed, a gift that he might

Give to all without angering the left or the right.

A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,

Each group of people, every religion;

Every ethnicity, every hue,

Everyone, everywhere...even you.

So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...

"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."

Tis the night before Christmas ...

It’s the night before Christmas
and all through the night
the tree frogs are warbling
to the Christ child’s delight.

A star to guide ...

I look to the heavens, too cloudy for star guidance ...
a travellers plight.
The car tyres are squealing
as they race off into the night.

Silent Night? Not likely!

The ta-ta’s are sleeping
in their leafy hides.
The locals are yelling …
sounds like they have imbibed.

The dogs, they are barking
disturbed from their sleep
in response to the yelling.
Can anyone sleep?

Two geckos are fighting over one desperate moth
who, like Icarus, flew too close to the light.
Unless he shows sheer strength to escape
he wont make this Christmas night.

Winter wonderland? Huh?

No hope of tradition
in this tropical town.
No snow or sleigh rides
it’s aircon to cool down.

Tis the week before Christmas

Tis the week before Christmas
a hot steamy night.
Not a gecko is clicking
No squeaking of mice.

They are still only tuning up ... and only a bit off key

Ah, the delightful sound that indicates that there might be life after the buildup ...

If you haven't lived in the tropics or even tried to survive the buildup to the refreshing rains of a tropical wet season; you may wonder what on earth I am rambling on about.

If you have been though a buildup, or experienced what the indigenious people of Kakadu say - when Gunumeleng changes to Gudjewg; you might have worked out what I am hinting at.

Today we had a lovely storm blow through, bringing about 13mm of cooling rain, which almost instantly dropped the temperature from a hot 31 degrees C to a pleasant 22 degrees C. It crept up a little later, but it has remained overcast and so appears cooler.

And tonight there is the beginning of the warming up of the Orchestra of the Green Tree Frog.

It will get hot again before the monsson decides to bless us with its presence; but while there is teasing rain there is hope of sanity.

And a little humour always helps, don't you think?

Too early for Santa

I heard a number of things falling on our roof and as it is a bit early for Rudolf, I decided to go and look.

Our driveway was scattered with large twigs from our African Mahogony tree and bark off the gum tree. There was a large white cockatoo sitting in the Mahogony chewing limbs off, lots of them, and dropping them on us.

Thanks mate; are you going to come back and pick them up? No, I guess not!
